Winter Weather Impacts Statewide Blood Supply
Mississippi Blood Services Urges Donors to Give Now
Flowood, MS – January 26, 2026 — Following recent winter weather across Mississippi, Mississippi Blood Services (MBS) is urging donors to act now as storm-related cancellations and hazardous travel conditions have significantly reduced blood donations statewide.
Blood donations are critically needed after multiple weather-related closures. If it is safe to travel and you are healthy, MBS encourages donors to give this week—especially those near the Flowood Donation Center.
Weather Closures Strain Blood Supply
Several mobile blood drives and donation centers—particularly in North Mississippi—were forced to close to ensure the safety of donors and staff. As a result, the state’s blood supply is now critically strained, while hospital and patient needs continue without pause.
“The storm may have passed, but its impact on the blood supply is ongoing,” said Kasey Dickson, Director of Marketing and Public Relations at Mississippi Blood Services. “Hospitals still need blood every day, and we need donors to help us recover and ensure patients continue to receive lifesaving care.”
Flowood Donation Center Offering Extended Hours
To help replenish the blood supply, MBS is encouraging donors in the metro area to visit the Flowood Donation Center, which will offer special extended hours this Saturday. O-negative and B-type blood are especially needed, though donors of all blood types are urged to give.
