Mississippi Blood Services (MBS) is reporting a significant decline in blood inventory and is urgently asking eligible donors across the state to donate blood or platelets as soon as possible to help meet patient needs.
As summer approaches, blood donations traditionally decline due to vacations, school breaks, and increased travel, while hospital demand remains steady. MBS is now seeing an urgent need for both blood and platelet donations to help maintain a stable supply for hospitals across Mississippi.
Recent decreases in donor turnout, combined with ongoing hospital usage, have placed added pressure on the blood supply. Blood types O-negative, O-positive, B-negative, B-positive, and A-negative are especially needed at this time.
“Hospital patients cannot wait for blood to be available,” said Kasey Dickson, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for MBS. “Trauma victims, sickle cell patients, cancer patients, surgical patients, and premature babies depend on volunteer donors every single day. We are asking the community to step forward during this urgent time. Patients across Mississippi are counting on donors to help replenish the blood supply.”
Community members are encouraged to donate at one of MBS donor centers or mobile blood drives statewide. Walk-ins are always welcome.
